My husband is moderate intolerance with caffeine and trying to avoid caffeine whenever possible. So he always checks if there is caffeine when he orders or buys tea and coffee. Since there are various kinds of Japanese tea not just green tea = Sen-cha, I thought having a list with a comparison with coffee and the other types of tea could be handy. Be noted the caffeine content is dependent on leaf type, the amount of water vs tea leaf, the amount of tea leaf vs other ingredients (such as Genmai-cha and Jasmin tea), brewing time, and the amount of each serving.
For a comparison, I listed up the mount of caffeine in 200ml apart from Espresso which is normally about less than 50ml, and Tall Matcha Latte.
<Caffeine Content>
Sen-cha : 40mg in 200ml
Hoji-cha : 40mg in 200ml
Genmai-cha : 20mg in 200ml
Small Matcha Latte from Starbucks : 40mg in 236ml (Tall -60mg in in 12oz/355ml.)
Oolong tea: 40mg in 200ml
Black tea : 60mg in 200ml
Jasmin tea (Jasmin in herbal tea) : 0mg in 200ml
Jasmin tea in green tea : 20mg in 200ml
Jasmin tea in black tea : 30mg in 200ml
Espresso 140mg in 50ml
Brewed coffee : 120-180g in 200ml
Instant coffee 90mg in 200ml
Decaf instant coffee : 5mg in 1 teaspoon (this is the amount you use for a cup of coffee at home)
